چکیده

The purpose of this study was to investigate the circadian changes in the abomasal secretions (quantities of juice, enzymes and electrolytes) of the preruminant calf. The gastric juice was collected every hour from five calves fitted with an innervated abomasal pouch and given milk twice daily, with a 7-h interval between the morning and the evening meals. The amounts of gastric secretions produced were steady during 24 h, except for changes after the meals. The morning meal caused a considerable increase in secretions of electrolytes and enzymes. The values of CI-, H +, Na+ + and K+ ions, chymosin and pepsin in the first postprandial hour were 3.8, 4.1, 3.5, 2.6, 2.4 and 2.1 times higher, respectively, than those of the 24th hour used as prefeeding levels. The influence of the evening meal on secretions of CIand Na + ions and enzymes was less marked and also more delayed for all electrolytes. Variations in the amounts secreted per hour appeared to be greater for H+ +

Studies on lipid digestion in the preruminant calf. The source of lipolytic activity in the abomasum.

1. Lipolytic and proteolytic activities and pH values were determined in secretions collected from innervated abomasal pouches and in abomasal contents from preruminant calves given liquid diets. 2. No lipolytic activity was detected in pouch secretions collected during 1 h after feeding, though lipolytic activity was present in abomasal contents; pepsin (EC 3.4.23.1) and renin (EC 3.4.23.4) we...

Enzyme potentialities of the abomasum and pancreas

The effect of age on the enzyme potentialities of abomasum (chymosin and pepsin) and pancreas (chymotrypsin, trypsin, lipase, colipase and amylase) was studied in the preruminant calf. Three foetuses were collected after slaughter of their dams (260 d of gestation) and 32 calves were maintained as preruminant and slaughtered between birth and 147 d of age. The abomasal mucosas and pancreata wer...

Circadian changes in energy expenditure in the preruminant calf: whole animal and tissue level.

A study was conducted using four preruminant calves to determine the contribution of portal-drained viscera, liver, and hindquarters to circadian changes in total energy expenditure, after removing variations due to behavioral patterns. Indirect calorimetry and in vivo arterio-venous techniques were used. Standing time was longer (P < .01) after the meals and shorter (P < .01) at night. These v...

Sheep abomasal phytobezoariasis: the effect of breed, season and age with histopathological observations

The prevalence of the latent form of sheep abomasal phytobezoariasis and the effect of husbandry management on this condition were determined in a survey in and industrial abattoir in Urmia from June 2005 to July 2006. The effect of different age groups and seasons on the prevalence of sheep abomasal phytobezoariasis was also determined. Furthermore, the histological changes in the affected abo...
